Research Interests

• Steering, control, and autonomy of the public administration, with a special focus on the balance between democracy and professionalism, politicians and civil servants
• Carrers in politics and civil service
• Gender in politics and public administration

Ongoing Research

Birgitta Niklasson is leading a research project financed by FAS. The reserach projects focuses on the roles of political appointees in the policy processes at the Swedish and the Danish government offices. Other researchers in the project are Prof. Peter Munk Christiansen and Ph.D. Patrik Öhberg.

Niklasson is also in the process of finishing a postdoc project financed by VR. The postdoc was carried out in close collaboration with COBRA. The study is based on a comparative survey directed to a large number of Swedish agencies, but that has also been carried out in several countires all over the world. The survey questions regard the steering, control, and autonomy of public agencies.
